Tuna(or salmon) dog treats

Why should people get all the good stuff?

I admit, I am a bit animal crazy.  I have been all my life.  My dogs are my family, and I’ve been known to make them homemade dog food, especially when they’re sick.   But if you have a few spare minutes on a weekend, consider making these treats.  They’re referred to as “doggy crack” in my house.  Even dogs who are not terribly food motivated will do anything for these.  A recipe makes a lot, and they store forever in the freezer, or on the counter, if you dry them.

The salmon variety is smellier, but also more tempting to stubborn dogs.

Recipe:

2(6oz) cans tuna in water or 1(14-150z) can salmon

2 eggs

1 to 1 1/2 C rice flour or all purpose wheat flour

handful of fresh parsley, or 2 tbsp dry parsley, optional(helps freshen dog breath, at least theoretically!)

Preheat  the oven to 350.  Grease a rimmed baking sheet thoroughly.  Even better, line it with parchment paper or tinfoil and grease that.

Open the cans of tuna or salmon, and dump them, liquid and all, into a blender.  Add the eggs, including the shells(calcium is good for dogs) and the parsley, if you’re using it.  Blend of process til the mixture is smooth.  Transfer the fish mixture to a bowl and add in the flour, a little at a time, until the mixture is the consistency of

cake batter.  Pour into the prepared pan and smooth it to an even thickness all around.  It may or may not reach to the edges of the pan, it’s fine either way.

Bake until the edges pull away from the pan, about 15 minutes.  Let it cool and cut it into squares.  They can now either be stored in the fridge or freezer, or dried for longer storage.  If you have a dehydrator, dry them at 250 until they’re crackerlike.  If you do not have a dehydrator, preheat your oven to 250 and spread the squares on a baking sheet(with lots of room for air

circulation) and bake in the oven for 15-30 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent burning.  They should be like tiny fish smelling crackers when they’re dried.
